I'm shaking my head too, after reading this.

To make a long story short, he took over to geek squad and they did the repair. Supposedly all of the browsers went down and needed to be reinstalled. I admit, I have never heard of that happening before.

If it makes you feel any better, I've never heard of that either.  All the browsers don't go down unless something happened in the *system* that caused that.  It's not like an aircraft, where if you break one thing in one system, it can take out another system.

Karen-B wrote:So I was down stairs and I asked him if he had asked them what triggered this event and did he ask them how to deal with it on his own. The answer to both, was NO!!! This is what makes living in this world difficult for me. Why would someone not want to know what caused the problem...how else could you avoid it??? Why wouldn't he want to know how to fix the problem in case it happens again??? Why is this person not walking around without an orderly/nurse following them everywhere they go????

Totally agree.  That's completely stupid. (shaking my head again)

I have a friend who is totally computer illiterate. She calls me for the simplest things. She constantly calls me for help (and I am far from a computer guru). I have told her to go to do the simplest things IE: go to the windows logo. the four little squares on the bottom of your screen. She has trouble even following that direction....... So bearing this in mind, I can understand that Paul would not want that information. My friend would be the same.

Karen, are you specifically trying to enlarge your font to 24?  If so, something broke on your response.  The "size=" statement is supposed to set your text size.  What happened is there wasn't a closing statement at the end (there should have been).  It would say /size in brackets.

Recently I have been trying to ‘unsubscribe’ to things I never subscribed to to begin with. Have any of you noticed the number of these emails that supposedly you can ‘unsubscribe’ from do not actually let you do it. Or that you can ‘unsubscribe’ on that page, hit the save my preferences, but it NEVER unsubscribes you???

I remember when the "unsubscribe" option became mandatory.  Wiki says:

The Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography And Marketing (CAN-SPAM) Act of 2003, signed into law by President George W. Bush on December 16, 2003, established the United States' first national standards for the sending of commercial e-mail and requires the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to enforce its provisions.

Unsubscribe compliance

  • A visible and operable unsubscribe mechanism is present in all emails.

  • Consumer opt-out requests are honored within 10 business days.

  • Opt-out lists also known as suppression lists are used only for compliance purposes

.

Content compliance

  • Accurate "From" lines

  • Relevant subject lines (relative to offer in body content and not deceptive)

  • A legitimate physical address of the publisher and/or advertiser is present. PO Box addresses are acceptable in compliance with 16 C.F.R. 316.2(p) and if the email is sent by a third party, the legitimate physical address of the entity, whose products or services are promoted through the email should be visible.

  • A label is present if the content is adult.

Sending behavior compliance

  • A message cannot be sent without an unsubscribe option.

  • A message cannot be sent to a harvested email address

  • A message cannot contain a false header

  • A message should contain at least one sentence.

  • A message cannot be null.

  • Unsubscribe option should be below the message

.

There are no restrictions against a company emailing its existing customers or anyone who has inquired about its products or services, even if these individuals have not given permission, as these messages are classified as "relationship" messages under CAN-SPAM. But when sending unsolicited commercial emails, it must be stated that the email is an advertisement or a marketing solicitation. Note that recipients who have signed up to receive commercial messages from you are exempt from this rule.

If a user opts out, a sender has ten days to cease sending and can use that email address only for compliance purposes. The legislation also prohibits the sale or other transfer of an e-mail address after an opt-out request. The law also requires that the unsubscribe mechanism must be able to process opt-out requests for at least 30 days after the transmission of the original message.

Use of automated means to register for multiple e-mail accounts from which to send spam compound other violations. It prohibits sending sexually oriented spam without the label later determined by the FTC of "SEXUALLY EXPLICIT." This label replaced the similar state labeling requirements of "ADV:ADLT" or "ADLT."

CAN-SPAM makes it a misdemeanor to send spam with falsified header information. A host of other common spamming practices can make a CAN-SPAM violation an "aggravated offense," including harvesting, dictionary attacks, IP address spoofing, hijacking computers through Trojan horses or worms, or using open mail relays for the purpose of sending spam.

The preview thing here sucks.  There are a bunch of <CR> in my above reply.  If I'm in the compose or edit mode, those don't show up when I do a preview.

For the most part, I do not bother to unsubscribe to emails that I continuously get for 2 reasons. The first is that it is time-consuming and most of the time never works. The second reason is if I go onto their site to unsubscribe, that site has a notification that I was there and I become a legitimate email address.

This just happened recently from an email. I had clicked and looked up an address to view the home at that location. I am now getting a lot of emails for a variety of homes, businesses, and properties for sale, as well as a variety of services available in that town!.... I tried to get off that list, but keep getting more emails.

The reason I know it is because of that original email I had looked at was because I never used my real name. When I initially clicked on the link I made up a name. ALL these emails are now coming in with the name Sandy- which is not me. Now when I see things heading with Sandy.... DELETE!

Has anyone noticed the newer scams going on now? It seems every business in the country is sending emails with a “We have a surprise for you....” and then they list a business like Home Depot or CVS??? Every time I get them, I think that the big surprise has to be that you will have been compromised or scammed out of something!!!! Things like this only adds to my mental fatigue.

These scam emails are getting worse and worse. I am now getting them from dozens of names with the same wording for auto insurance and also to buy a home in the area of where my old home was. (I assume they got my email address because I just looked up my old home.) I just keep deleting them, but it is very annoying.
